The mobile fleet in the United States ages at an alarming rate, already reaching an average of 14 years of age. At nine years old and exceeding 150,000 kilometers, it is considered that a vehicle is old and that the repairs that it requires for its correct operation will be unprofitable. However, our cars continue to turn out to be years old and are becoming more polluting and inefficient. The future is not anything to look forward to: it seems that by 2018, the average age of vehicles in the United States will be 15 years.
Over the years, the dangers increase and the risk of mortality in the event of an accident increases. Some manufacturers assure that the distribution belts of their engines do not need any repairs, as they are designed to withstand over the life of the vehicle, which they estimate to be about 210,000 kilometers.
Nine years: the life of a car
If the car has not exceeded three years and is below 40,000 kilometers, it is still considered new. During this period, the vehicles do not involve major problems, they hardly cause incidents and, in addition, they are still under warranty. If the model is Premium, up to five years is still considered new.
From the fifth year (or when the vehicle has accumulated more than 70,000 kilometers) appear the first signs of wear by the use. These are minor incidents, but they are increasing as time passes.
When it is eight years or 100,000 kilometers is when the first significant repairs arise. And once past the barrier of nine years or 150,000 kilometers, you can say that the car is old. In this case, the amount of money destined to its correct functioning will be excessively elevated, whereas the price of the car will have depreciated to the minimum. This makes it an unprofitable vehicle.
Classic or old car?
Some cars far exceed the average age of life and yet are not considered old, but classic. But what is it that makes a vehicle acquire that qualification?
Making a difference is not easy. It is a concept that does not depend on age, nor on its economic value. The reality is that there are cars that are already born a classic, while others will never get such a title, however long they may be.
For administrative purposes, a vehicle can only be considered classic if it exceeds 25 years. But the great characteristic of this type of vehicles is its historical value. In order to be cataloged as such, they must be original, that is, the model has not been modified, or if it is, according to the technology of the time.
